Ndarugu Tea Factory Company Limited
Kuri Tea Factory is a satellite of Theta Tea factory. Its construction started in 2005 and completed in 2009. The Factory was started with an aim of easing congestion at Theta Tea Factory which was operating far much above capacity. It is also a form of rural industrialisation that promotes employment opportunities of fast growing rural youth.
The factory started operations in April 2010 to manufacture black C.T.C. tea, with an annual installed processing capacity of 10,000,000 kgs green leaf. The factory has however surpassed the capacity.
Kuri serves 3,245 registered growers who deliver their green leaf to 35 coded collection centres and 35 Uncoded collection centres. The total area under tea measures approximately 2743.49 hectares’ and a total of 14,711,596 bushes have been planted. The factory catchments are rich in red volcanic soils which is good for growth of tea.
The factory is situated at 2,100 meters above the sea level on the slopes of Aberdare Ranges in Kirangi Sub location, Ndarugu location, Gatundu South District in Kiambu county. The main rivers that serve the factory include Ruabura river. The main clones that are grown in the catchment includes 31/8, 6/8. The temperatures ranges from a minimum of 13 degrees to a maximum of 28 degrees Celsius while the relative humidity ranges from 70 -90 degrees.
The type of teas sold by the factory include the four primary grades namely BP1- Broken Pekoe,
PF1 –Pekoe Fannings, PD- Pekoe Dust and D1 – Dust 1 and Secondary grades include Fannings and Dust.
The factory is governed by 8 directors who are elected by the tea farmers representing seven electoral areas plus the board member representing Zone 1.

IKUMBI TEA FACTORY COMPANY LTD
Ikumbi Tea Factory falls within KTDA Administrative Region -1. The Factory was commissioned in 1971 to manufacture C.T.C tea. This was the first small holder tea factory in the greater Murang’a. It was started under the manament Brook Bond Co. Ltd. Kenya Tea Development Authority took over as the Managing Agents in 1975 until the year 2000 when it was transformed into a private company under the management of Kenya Tea Development Agency Ltd.
Ikumbi Tea Factory is located at Kangari Location, Kigumo Division, and Kigumo District in Murang’a County. It is situated 85 kms from Nairobi and 43 kms from Thika Town. It is 20S of Equator and 360 E of Greenwich Meridian at a height of about 1983m Above Sea Level. The factory occupies an area of 19.8 acres of land.
Locate on the slope of the Aberdare ranges where the tea growers on rich volcanic soils. Ikumbi Tea Factory Co. Ltd deals in manufacturing and selling of Black CTC teas. NJUNU TEA FACTORY COMPANY LIMITED
Njunu Tea Factory was commissioned in 1979, with an installed capacity of 15 Million Kgs/annum. The Factory is located in Thika District of Central Province. It is situated along Thika - Gatanga Road about 37 kms West of Thika and approximately 78 Kms from Nairobi City of Kenya.The area under which the factory lies is about 10 acres of land with a catchment area of 1157.19 Hectares of land under tea.
Climatically it lies in upper middle altitude an altitude range of 1920 meters above sea level and longitude of 360 53’E and latitude of 00. 47’S with the soil type marginally varying as well drained, deep, dark, red to yellowish red friable to firm, sandy clay with humic acid soil i.e. Humic Acrisols on tertiary as basic igneous rocks.
Approaching the factory from Thika town side is the Great famous Ndakaini Dam from which Nairobi Town and Environs get fresh water supply. The Dam gets its water from the scenic Aberdare Ranges with the Aberdare Forest. This has the horizon with naturally designed ranges green from the earth with intertwining carpet strips of green tea bushes within.
Mount Kenya together with the Aberdare Ranges makes Njunu catchment receive rainfall almost thoughout the year. In the Aberdare Ranges, there are Elephants, Buffalos and Monkeys. The average daily temperatures are about 260C which enables attainment of withers by applying minimum steam. The withers bring out full cup qualities of black tea. Attaining a balanced cup in terms of liquor comes without much struggle. Tea picking is done manually which boosts the accuracy of picking good quality tea. The catchment still has vast area yet to be exploited with a rich store of nutrients conducive for tea growing.

GACHARAGE TEA FACTORY COMPANY LIMITED
The factory located in Murang’a County, Kigumo district, Gacharage Division, Mununga Location, Mununga Sub-location. It is 56Kms from the major Town, Thika, 107 Kms from the capital city Nairobi and 610 Kms from the port of Mombasa.
Geographically, the factory lies at 2188 metres [7178feet] above sea level. To the West is the great Aberdare ranges, which is the main source of the rivers that serve the over 3 million people in Nairobi and Environs with clean water. To the north east is Mt Kenya with its beautiful sceneries. To the South is the famous Ndaka-ini water dam. The factory is built on high ground giving advantage point to observe rolling green tea farms on all horizons.
The rainfall pattern is bimodal with fairly uniform Distribution (long rains in April, and short rains in October). The area under tea is 1059.42 Ha. It lies between two tributaries of Tana River – Irati and Maragua.
The Factory was commissioned in the October 2002 with a green leaf capacity of 10 million annually. The factory was officially opened in the year 2010 by the Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga the former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya. The factory is owned 100% by the small scale Tea Farmers with 5213 active Tea Growers. The Factory is led by a board composed of eight directors.
The factory has a handling capacity of 10 million kilograms of green leaf having handled 130,541,892.7 Greenleaf by the year 2014. The factory specialises in production black CTC Teas with a plan of introducing orthodox teas production by the year 2017.
Gacharage has been certified by Fairtrade to sell products under this label since May 2006. The partnership between Gacharage and FLO has enabled Gacharage community to undertake fair-trade sponsored projects which has gone a long way in improving the living standards for surrounding community.
The Factory has also acquired other series of International Standards Certifications among them
ISO 9001-2008 Quality Management Systems.

KANYENYAINI TEA FACTORY COMPANY LIMITED
Kanyenyaini was the earliest and largest tea processing Factory in Murang'a and was officially opened in 1974. Before then, tea in the area which had been planted as early as 1958 used to be taken all the way to Chinga and Ikumbi tea Factories for processing. The factory serves Kangema community.
The Factory is located in Central Province of Kenya, Murang’a North District, Kangema Division, Kanyenyaini Location and Gitugu Sub-location at a Latitude/longitude of 0.70 south of equator and 36.70 east of Greenwich meridian, and Altitude of 2000 Metres above sea level. The distance from Nairobi is 116Kms.
The area under tea is 7,875 Ha. with 8,724 small scale tea growers. The factory manufactures and processes the following clones of tea: 31/8, 6/8, S15/10, TN14-3, PMC61
The factory can be accessed through the following roads: Murang’a – Kangema-Kanyenyaini Tarmac road branching from Nairobi - Nyeri Highway. 33Kms of gravel roads network connecting all Tea Collection Centers. The following Georgraphical features can be found around the factory: Nyandarua (Aberdare ridges) to the west, Maragua river to the south, Kagondo river to the North.Memorial Catholic shrine in Tuthu marking hundred years of missionary work. A Number of streams run along the ridges in the whole catchments area, giving rise to rich agricultural alluvial soils in the valleys. The distance from Nairobi is 116Kms.
The area enjoys cool and warm day and night temperatures, ranging from 120-220centigrade. It experiences 1750-2200mm rainfall with relative humidity of 75.35% – 77.58%. It lies on an altitude of 2000Metres above sea level and has red volcanic acidic soils (Podosols) PH 4.5 – 5.6.

GATUNGURU TEA FACTORY
The factory is situated in Murang’a County, Mathioya Sub- County, Njumbi Division, Kiriti Location,0.65 degree south of equator and 36.15 degree east of the meridian. It is 126 kilometers from Nairobi.
The Factory operations started on 26th October 1981. It currently has 52 operational buying centers. The Factory has Three CTC lines and 3 driers with a 4000 to 4,500 kgs G.L. per hour. Total installed through put is 6000 kgs per 1 hour.
The Factory has Six Catchment areas and 7433 Number of Growers. Gatunguru manufactures the following tea grades:31/8, 6/8 411, KAG1, KAG 3 KAG4, PMC61, SFS 150, BB35, TN 14, ST 5110, 303.
Gatunguru Tea Factory can be accessed through the following roads: Nyeri - Kiriaini - Kangema Road and Njumbi- Gacharage-ini - Mioro Road
The area around the factory is surrounded by Tuthu Valley, Nyagatugu Hills, Aberdare Ranges and Nyarwara Falls. The area temperatures are cool and warm, with moderate rainfall between 1400 to 2000mm per year. Humidity is between 90 to 96 with an altitude of 2000m above sea level. The region soils are red volcanic soils of PH: 4.5-5.6

Gitugi Tea Factory is located in Mumwe location, Othaya Division, Nyeri South District. It lies 37 degrees East and 2 degrees south of Equator and 150 km and 22km from Nyeri town.
The factory was built in 1983 and commissioned 1984. It serves 5,433 growers. Gitugi manufactures the following clones of tea: 31/8, 6/8 303/377
