Factory History

The factory was built in 1981 and completed in 1983.Commissioning was done in 1984 for the commercial tea production (manufacture). It’s located in Gatamaiyu division of Lari District (Kiambu County) 65 km from Nairobi inclusive 11km off Githunguri town along Kagwe-Kimende route.

The factory serves 5 administration locations of Gatamaiyu Division serving about 6325 growers with 1941.05 hectares comprising of 16.914,611M bushes ,all distributed in 61 buying centers. Lies 37degrees east of prime meridian south of the equator and on about 6800ft above the sea level. The Aberdare ranges and Kinare Forest are natural features near it.

Kagwe Tea Factory grows the following tea clones: 6/8, 31/8, TN 14/3, SFS 150, BB 35 and a few PMC 51.

The Factory covers the following Electoral zones:

4.    Lower Nyanduma
5.    Upper Nyanduma
6.    Gachika

Kagwe Tea Factory ISO 9001 ( version 2000) Certified in 2005.Kagwe has been operating on controlled production process in accordance with ISO 9001 (version 2000),HACCP and KTDA standards. Internal and external audits complete the control of the production process. The Company has also ISO 22000 certified in 2009. The Company has also met other international requirements like roofing with galvanized iron sheets and doing away with the asbestos sheet.

Factory Information

The Factory was constructed between     1979… and …1980……. and later commissioned on 1981. The Factory is located in Kiambu County Gatundu South District, Kiganjo Division, in Mundoro Location.  It is slightly North of Nairobi, along Kenyatta Road  about 60 kilometers from Nairobi town and 22 kilometers from Gatundu. It is located in the home district of the First President and founding father of the nation, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. Theta has 4,775 registered growers, 37 coded collection centers and  10,850,989 censured bushes        

Theta is located in the Aberdare ranges between two big rivers Thiririka and Theta serving its catchment. Theta is known for black, neat, well rolled leaf free from fibre  golden bright, soft and delicate mellow liquors with high flavour. The factory grows the following tea clones: 31/8  PMC, TN14/3, S/1510, SFS/150, 6/8. Theta sells the following types of tea: Black CTC: Grades-BPI, PFI, PD, DI, FI and DUST

Factory Information

Set in the tranquil valleys of vast acres of tea plantations, is Ngere Tea Factory located in Murang'a County Central province. The area is covered by physical features such as River Chania, River Kayuyu and River Thika. The famous Ndakaini Dam that is the source of water for Nairobi residents is also located in the area.

Ngere covers about 2,400 HA with 21,464,885 tea bushes. Making it among one of the largest KTDA managed factories.  It was established on 17th November 1993 to help ease the congestion at Njunu Tea Factory. Administratively the area is located in region 1. It has 185 buying centers and shades. Small scale tea farmers in the area produce a lot of tea.

The factory is known for producing the best quality tea in the world market and goes by this buy line to communicate its mark of quality. As an industrial unit, it serves 8,000 small scale farmers from Murang'a County.
Tea in Ngere is graded in two categories:

Primary grading and secondary grading. In primary grading the tea is subdivided into four products: BP 1 - broken pekoe 1, PF1 pekoe fanning 1, PD pekoe dust and TMF. Secondary grading is divided into dust, fanning, f1 and BMF (Broken mixed fanning)

One unique feature of this factory is the 441 acres of land that it has used for sustainable fuel.  The factory is keen on planting trees with approximately 7,000 trees already planted in the compound. It has also procured 160 acres of agricultural land to specifically plant eucalyptus trees.

One of the challenges Ngere has faced over the passed year is over supply of tea, poor road network, high energy and labor costs.

The factory is looking to be more efficient in the process so as to bring down the cost of production. See energy costs go down by improving efficiencies in thermo energy. Fitting gadgets that use less electricity.

Factory Information


The factory is located in Kiambu District, central province about 60 kms south west of Nairobi city. It is located along uplands Githunguri Road about 10 kilometres from uplands and 8 kilometres from Githunguri, in Githunguri Division, Kiambu District, and central province. It is about 2000 metres above sea level.

The factory was commissioned in May 1974 to serve small scale tea farmers within Kiambu District of Central province. It was commissioned with a capacity of less than 10 million kgs of green leaf but later expanded to the current capacity of 15 million kgs of green leaf.

The factory offers the following services:

Tea extension services which is charged with the responsibility of offering extension services to the farmers on good farm husbandry e.g. fertilizer, plucking standards, weeding, pruning and maintenance of a good plucking table.

Leaf collection services which ensures the leaf is delivered by farmers get to the factory in good time and in good condition.

Production is the section that undertakes the processing of the leaf to produce high quality made tea ready for consumption. Currently Kambaa Tea Factory is ranked among the top best twenty in Kenya with regard to market tea prices.

Kambaa Tea Factory catchment has about 2,007 hectares (4957.29 acres) of tea owned by about 5,473 small-scale farmers and who are also owners of the factory. On average each grower owns about 0.38 hectares of tea. To facilitate collection, there are 68 collection centres.

Several clones of tea are planted, major ones being 6/8; TN14/3 & BB15 the type of soil in this area is red loam. Some of the community based projects are dairy farming, horticulture and poultry farming.Most of the roads are accessible. Kambaa is situated between two major high ways namely; Nairobi-Nakuru highway which is just 10kms away, and Nairobi-Thika highway about 40kms away. Tea is planted on ranges, and there are five rivers in the catchment namely; Mukuyu, Ruiru, Bathi, Kamiti and Ikuria.

Kambaa experiences cold weather (average annual temperatures range between 12oc and 19oc all year round). We receive an average rainfall of 1500mm in a year. The average relative humidity is 80%.

Factory Information


Mataara tea factory falls within KTDA administrative region 1 and is located in Mataara sub location, Gituamba location, Gatundu north constituency in the larger Kiambu County. It is 79kms from Nairobi.

The factory was commissioned in 1964 by the first president of republic of Kenya H.E. Mzee Jomo Kenyatta (then prime minister) to manufacture C.T.C. black tea with an annual installed processing capacity of 5,500,000 kgs annually.

Mataara catchment area is divided into six electoral areas & has a total of 4,046 registered growers with a total of 1,155Ha (2,854 acres) under tea giving an average farm size of 0.3 (0.74 acres).

The catchment has potential for higher production per init area if improvement is done on crop husbandry. However, further subdivision of farm holdings is having a negative impact on production and sustainability especially when considering the economies of scale.

At the time of commissioning in 1964, the annual installed processing capacity for the factory was 5,500,000 kgs green leaf. It was first expanded in 1985/86 with an additional processing capacity of 4,500,000. A further modernization to handle 5,000,000kgs was undertaken in 1996/97.

During the last expansion phase carried out in 2011/2012 the factory capacity did not change because the original withering decks were decommissioned and replaced with the new installation; the current and existing annual processing capacity of the factory therefore remains as 10,000,000(millions) kgs green leaf though with an ability to accommodate up to 15million kgs.

Toror Tea Factory Co. is a Satellite Factory of Tegat Tea Factory Co. Ltd and was established in the year 2006 and completed in the year 2008. Upon completion, trial runs started on 20th January 2009 up to June 2009 under the management of the Mother Factory (Tegat Tea Factory Co. Ltd). It started full commercial operations in 1st July 2009 and tea produced started being sold under Toror Tea Factory. It has a capacity to process ten million kgs of green leaf per year which translates to around 2.5 million kgs of made tea at a conversion rate of 25%. We are ISO 22000:2005 (Food Safety), ISO 9001:2008 (Quality Management) and Rainforest Alliance (RA) certified.

The Factory is situated in Kericho County, Ainamoi Division, Ainamoi Location and Kipchimchim Sub-Location and it is proximal to Kericho town. It is about 8 kms from Kericho town and around 4 kms off Nakuru-Kericho highway.

The main objective of the company is to manufacture and market C.T.C black teas that are safe for human consumption. We specifically produce two varieties of grades, namely; Primary grades which comprises of BP1, PF1, PD and D1 and Secondary grades which comprises of F1, Dust, and BMF.

The current organization structure comprises of Board of Directors whom are shared with Tegat Tea Factory and are elected by shareholders representing six electoral areas and one nominated gender director who are headed by a Chairman appointed amongst them. It is managed by Kenya Tea Development Agency under a management team headed by a Factory Unit Manager who oversees the overall operations of the company.

There are four departments namely, Production whose functions include manufacturing  and factory operations, Field Services whose functions includes leaf collection and tea extension services, ICT which is specifically concerned with information, communication and technology functions and Accounting whose main function is the preparation of management and financial accounting information among other duties.

Factory Information

Tegat Tea Factory Co. Ltd. was incorporated under the Companies Act (Cap 486) by registrar of companies on October 1971 by James Finlays and handed over to KTDA in 1974.

Tegat enjoys bi-modal type of rainfall that enhances two cropping seasons. The long rains seasons runs from February/March to June and short rains from August to November/December. The annual rainfall ranges between1500mm  to 2200mm with mean temperature of 0°22’S, 35° 21°E.

The factory is headed by the Factory Unit Manager, who oversees all the operations of the company covering factory operations, leaf collection logistics, extension services, information and communication technology and accounting. Below the factory unit manager are line managers as per the company organization structure chart.

Tegat Tea Factory Co. Ltd aims at being the leading producer and manufacturer of high quality and safe black teas in the world. To provide effective and efficient services to the small holder tea farmers in the production and processing of high quality and safe black for benefit of all share holders and stake holders.

The factory is situated 7 km  off Cherote (Kaptebeswet) junction south of Kericho-Kisumu road. Alternatively situated 4 km off Kapsuser market Kericho- Litein road or 9 km off Sosiot market Sondu road. Belgut division, Waldai location of Kericho district of south rift.

The factory sells the following tea grades:
Primary grades – BP1, PF1,PD, D1, TMF,
Secondary grades : F1,Dust, BMF, TMF 2

The company is a limited liability company with six Board of directors elected directly by the
Shareholders and one nominated gender director. The Board authors corporate policies governing the conduct of company business. Basic operational unit is the leaf collection centre owned by a group of growers within a locality: The daily affairs of the centre are governed by a five member committee popularly elected by the affiliated tea growers. Six catchments areas namely: Waldai, Kapsuser, Sosiot, Mosop, Ainamoi and Kapsaos Zone

The scope of Tegat Tea Factory Integrated Management System for ISO 9001:2008 is Provision of: Agricultural Services, reception of Green Leaf, Manufacture, Packing and Dispatch of Made Black Tea, while for ISO 22000:2005 the scope excludes provision of agricultural services but includes all others as under ISO 9001:2008.

The factory has integrated training for farmers in the area on sustainable practices (RA), Farmers Field Schools extension methodology and adapted climate change migration systems. In addition the factory has also put in place budgetary provisions for training on sustainable activities year round in our faction catchment’s set up.
