MOMUL TEA FACTORY COMPANY LIMITED
Momul Tea Factory Co. Ltd is one of the 66 factories managed by KTDA Ltd that serves the small scale holder tea sub sector. It is located in Kapkitony Village, Kiptome Location, Kabianga Division, Kericho West District in Kericho County, Kenya.
The factory was commissioned in December 2002. It started as a two line factory with an annual capacity of 10 million Kgs of green leaf. Within the first 2 years of operation, the factory received crop twice its capacity. This led to the expansion of the factory to a 15 million Kgs of green leaf capacity. The third line became fully operational in December 2006 and is able to process up to 20 million green leaf per year.
The factory processes 16,200 growers with over 2,796 Hectares of land under tea. Average farm size is 1.5 Acres. The factory runs 63 buying centers - Each Buying Center has a list of registered farmers. Buying centres are points where farmers deliver leaf for “Sale” to the factory. The factory Lorries then collect green leaf from the buying center and deliver to the factory for processing. Average Production per bush is 0.80Kg per year. Census- Total of 30,762,787 bushes.
The catchment area is divided into six Administrative Tea Zones. Each zone has a TESA (Tea Extension Service Assistant) in charge of extension services and a director elected by the farmers, who is a member of the Momul Tea Factory Board. Each Zone has an average of 8 to 13 buying centres.
The company has a unique management model with the daily administration function under the Factory Unit Manager, who is also the secretary to the board. This office is responsible for implementation of the policies laid down by the board as well as coordinating the various departments.
Temperatures range between 160 C – 250 C and are perceived low moderate and favourable. The area ranges between 1216 – 2100M above sea level. The area is found to be a bit high and therefore colder.
Rainfall ranges between 1000MM – 2200MM annually. The rain is received in two seasons i.e. long and short rains in the months of March and April and October to November respectively. It’s well distributed within the catchment and the year. The rain is enough and reliable to support Agricultural Activities in the area condusively.
Momul catchment is found in a region where volcanic eruptions had occurred hence origin of volcanic soil types. The soils can be classified as latosols i.e dark red clay loam and in other areas black Cotton soils. These soils are rich in plant nutrients and can accommodate productively varied kind of Agricultural crops due to being rich in availability of nutrients and good water holding capacities.
The company is ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 22000:2005 certified. The main market outlets are through Mombasa Auction (72.9%), Factory Door Sales (1%) and Direct Sales overseas (21%). The main Buyers are Lipton, Taylor’s of Harrogate, Chai Trading, Vanrees UK, Mombasa Coffee Ltd, Coftea Agencies Ltd, Devchand Ke sharfi (DK) Tata global beverages G.B Ltd, Habibullah Peracha Co. and Saleem Trades.
