The factory was constructed in1974. It was commissioned on 5th January 1976 to manufacture C.T.C. made black tea with an annual installed processing capacity of 5,500,000 million Kg's green leaf. The first expansion was done in 1986 to 1987 for an extra capacity of 4,500,000 Kg's green leaf. Due to the improved green leaf production, second expansion was done in 1996 to 1997 for an additional 5,000,000 Kg's green leaf capacity giving a total of 15 million kilograms of green leaf processing capacity per year. Plans are underway to have the capacity enhanced through modernization to cater for the rising production costs and efficiency need.
Githongo Tea Factory co. Ltd. is situated in Meru Central District of Eastern province, 11kms off the Embu- Meru highway, west of Meru town, the home town of Meru National Park and approximately 261 Km from Nairobi, on the windward, eastern slopes of Mt Kenya at an altitude of 1971m above sea level. The highest peak on the mountain is 5109 m above sea level (Batian Peak). The exact position of the factory is 35o 37’ East of Greenwich Meridian and 0o 01’ North of Equator. The tea factory falls within KTDA administrative Region IV.
Githongo Tea Factory Co. Limited catchment borders the natural Mount Kenya Forest. This has an effect of making the ambient temperatures very cool and conducive for tea growing. It also enhances the flavour in tea quality due to slow shoot growth. Githongo tea is grown between 1600 - 2000 m above sea level which means all of it is above the brown line which is at 1500 m above sea level.
Githongo tea has coppery bright character, a special flavor and cup color which are equivalent to no other factory, all of which buyers are addicted to.
The production levels of green leaf have risen from a meager 1,098,707 Kg's (269248 kgs made tea) in 1976 to a high of 16,676,483 Kg's Greenleaf (465,248 made tea) in 1998/1999.
Due to construction of other tea processing factories in the neighborhood localities, the crop has since gone down to lower levels of 9,713,759 Kg's Greenleaf (2,482,534 Kg's made tea) in the year 2006/2007.
