SECOND CONSIGNMENT OF KTDA FERTILIZER DOCKS AT PORT
Mombasa 27thAugust 2015…The second and final batch of 38,000 metric tons of fertilizer imported by Kenya Tea Development Agency Management Service Limited (KTDA MS) on behalf of small holder tea farmers has docked at the Mombasa Port.
The NPK 26:5:5 fertilizer was shipped from a manufacturer in Russia. The fertilizer is currently being offloaded from M.V Spar Virgo ship. It is packed in 50kg bags for onward distribution to tea farmers upcountry through their respective factories.
Distribution for the first consignment of 39,000 metric tons received in July has been successfully completed. With the arrival of this shipment, a total of 77,050 metric tonnes of fertilizer would have been distributed.
KTDA Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Lerionka Tiampati, said that about 1000 trucks have been contracted to transport the fertilizer to all the 66 tea factories. He added that importing fertilizer in bulk enables the 560, 000 smallholder tea farmers to enjoy the economies of scale.
“Importing big quantities of fertilizer enables us to leverage on internal economies of scale which means the small holder tea farmer is able to buy a 50-kg bag of fertilizer at affordable price.”
He urged farmers to apply the fertilizer with the onset of short rains expected to start next in September, 2015. He said fertilizer application will ensure high productivity.
The quantity of fertilizer a farmer will get depends on the number of tea bushes owned. On average, a 50kg bag of fertilizer is applied to 700 bushes. The fertilizer requirement is usually determined in November and December ahead of fertilizer procurement the following year.
“Every year in November and December, KTDA field services staff take fertilizer requirement orders from farmers and KTDA uses this information to place import orders. Over the years, we have developed efficient distribution networks to deliver the fertilizer to the tea buying centres for distribution to tea farmers,” Mr. Tiampati added.
