Eight KTDA-managed factories are now processing orthodox teas as the Agency steps up efforts to diversify product offerings amidst a global glut of black CTC tea.

The factories currently producing orthodox teas are- Itumbe, Michimikuru, Kangaita, Imenti, Kiru, Thumaita, Gitugi and Chinga. Another two factories (Kimunye and Kagwe) are in the nal stages of equipment installation before they start production.The diversication strategy is aimed at opening new markets and cushioning earnings from an overreliance on black CTC tea whose prices have taken a dip at the Eight factories now producing orthodox in diversication strategyMombasa Tea Auction.

Orthodox teas are whole leaf teas processed using a delicate method of gradually rolling and drying green leaf into smaller sizes of different twists and styles. This is unlike CTC tea where the leaf is cut into ne granules by a set of rollers.There is a broad range of orthodox teas including black orthodox, green tea, purple tea, premium white tea and white tea. Kenyan-made orthodox teas are mainly sold in Iran, Germany, Russia and the United Arab Emirates.
