Igembe tea factory was constructed in 2006 and ended in December 2008. Trial runs began in Dec 2008 to June 2009. The factory started formally in July 2009 and officially commissioned to manufacture Black C.T.C. teas by Former President Mwai Kibaki, on 17th April 2010. Igembe Tea Factory Company limited is a satellite factory of Kiegoi Tea Factory Company limited. The plan to construct Igembe factory was made after projections showed a huge increase in production beyond the installed capacity of the mother factory, Kiegoi.
The Factory is a one line Factory with an annual installed capacity of 5 million Kg’s of green leaf. It serves around 3,600 growers of the greater Akachu Electoral zone of Kiegoi Tea Factory, which covers 898 hectare consisting of 7million bushes.
Igembe Tea Factory is located in Athi Market, off Meru-Mikinduri, Maua road, within the undulating slopes of Nyambene hills. At an altitude of about 1650 MASL, the factory has a panoramic view of the picturesque Tharaka plains. It is 20 Kilometers from Maua Town and some 350 kilometers North of Nairobi.
The area is served with a good network of roads, sufficient rainfall and enjoys a rich mix of agriculture and the popular Miraa culture. Itumbe Tea Factory is situated in Kirindine location, Akachu division, Igembe South District, Meru County.
