KTDA Holdings Limited KTPC ’s Chemosit Hydro Power Plant on Course for Completion
Tea farmers in Kericho and Bomet are set to benefit from lower energy costs and improved earnings as the 2.5MW Chemosit Mini Hydro Power Project nears completion.
This critical infrastructure is a game-changer for the tea sector, designed to provide sustainable, affordable, and reliable energy to the tea factories in Litein, Chelal, Momul, Toror, and Tegat—helping reduce power costs and, ultimately, the cost of tea production.
The project, currently under construction in Kericho County, is on track for completion by September 2026.
KPTC Acting GM, Eng. John Mwenda, noted that the power station will enhance efficiency at factory level by improving power stability while delivering long-term cost savings.
Energy accounts for nearly 30% of tea processing costs, making KTDA’s investment in renewable energy a strategic step towards improving returns for over 650,000 smallholder tea farmers.
Through KTDA Power Company Ltd (KPTC), the Agency has already commissioned 6 hydropower projects and is on course to deliver 5 more—advancing sustainability while unlocking additional value through carbon credit opportunities.
