KTDA Holdings Limited The groundbreaking of the 2.8MW Taunet Small Hydropower Project in Nandi County marks a significant milestone in KTDA’s efforts to lower tea production costs and increase returns for thousands of smallholder tea farmers.
The project is fully owned by tea farmers through their KTDA factory shareholding structure, reinforcing the farmer-driven investment model in sustainable energy development.
The Hydro power will directly benefit Chebut, Kapsara, and Mudete Tea Factories, providing reliable, affordable and clean energy for tea processing operations serving approximately 48,000 smallholder farmers across Zone 12.
Developed by Chemuka Power Company in partnership with KTDA Power Company Limited, the project is expected to be completed within approximately 18–24 months from commencement.
Through this investment in captive hydropower, KTDA factories will reduce dependence on the national grid, stabilize power supply, and unlock significant cost savings that will directly improve farmer payouts.
The Event was graced by Chief Guest Felix Koskei, Head of Public Service; Paul Ronoh, Principal Secretary, State Departure Agriculture; and area Josses Lelmengit, Member of Parliament for Emgwen Constituency .
This investment reinforces KTDA’s continued commitment to sustainable energy solutions that strengthen factory performance and improve livelihoods across tea-growing regions.
