Embu County
Factory History
The factory was built in 1972 and commissioned on 6th February 1973 for manufacture of Green tea. By then it was managed by a Japanese company known as Kenya Maruzen. It was then, that there was limited green tea market in the world and it became uneconomical for the production of the same. In 1979, the green tea production was stopped and Kenya Maruzen sold the factory to the then Kenya Tea Development Authority, on behalf of the tea farmers in the area. The processing machinery of green tea was eliminated and those of black tea manufacture installed. The factory reopened for black tea manufacture in 1980.
Location
The factory is located on the South Eastern Slopes of Mt. Kenya, Eastern Province, Embu county, Embu East District, Runyenjes North Division, Kagaari Location, Kianjokoma Sub location, Kiandong’o Village. It is 20 kilometres from Embu town the Provincial Headquarters and 152 kilometres from Nairobi the capital city of Kenya. It is 25 minutes south of Equator and 370 23 minutes West; 1830m above sea level.
Number of growers
The factory serves 10,481 small-scale tea growers of Embu community with a total hectarage of 1688.65Ha.
Clones grown
The breed grown is clonal tea of Assamica variety. Some of the clones include 6/8, 31/8, 15/10 and other mixed clones which make up 87% of the tea grown.
Access Road
It is served by a 12km Tarmac road from Embu – Meru highway branch at Mutunduri.
Feed Rivers
The catchment is served by several streams and rivers emanating from the slopes of Mt Kenya. These include Kapingazi, Ena, Nyanjara, Thambana among others, all being tributaries of river Tana, Kenya’s largest river.
Climate
The environment around the factory is depicted by cool wet climate. An average annual rainfall of 1800mm is received and temperatures are moderate ranging from 140c to 220c

The catchment’s has deep well drained volcanic soils of notisol type

Fairtrade market gives premiums after purchase of tea from a fairtrade certified producer like Mungania in accordance with the fairtrade standard.
Mungania is a receipient of these premiums which it has channeled to useful community projects for the benefit of those around us.
Special Projects& Corporate Social Investment:
The company has invested in tree farms in different areas a total of 308 acres
Thuci hydro power is a company owned by Mungania in partnership with Rukuriri and Kathangariri
Mungania has several projects in partnership with donors and KTDA foundation for enlightening growers on financial literacy, empowering them economically and assisting in mitigating climate change. Mungania has completed several fair-trade projects in schools, markets and in special needs schools among others
