Factory History:

The factory was commissioned in 2006 for the commercial production of CTC teas.  In June 2014 the factory diversified into the production of black orthodox, green tea and other specialty teas.

Factory Location:

Itumbe Tea Factory is located in Kenyerere sub location, Mokwerero location, Sameta sub-county in Kisii County. The factory is 15 km from Kisii town off the Kisii-Itumbe-Igare road

Altitude:

The Factory lies at 34⁰ 46’ 51’’E of prime meridian 0⁰ 46’ 58’’S of the equator and at an elevation of 6070 ft above the sea level.

Number of Growers in the Area:

Currently, the factory serves 13,630 growers with a potential area of 3634 Ha of land.

Types of Teas grown:

The prominent clones grown in the area includes 6/8, 31/8, TN 14/3, SFS 150, BB 35 and a few PMC 51.

Climate &Natural Features:

The factory catchment enjoys a warm and temperate climate with significant rainfall of 1200-2000 mm per annum.

The natural feature found in the factory catchment includes River Kuja and Sameta Hills.

Certifications:

Itumbe Tea Factory is ISO 9001: 2015 and ISO 22000: 2018 certified.The factory is also certified Rainforest Alliance and Fair-trade

Special Projects& Corporate Social Investment:

Itumbe tea factory in collaboration with other factories in the region is undertaking Nyakwana Micro-Hydro Electricity Generation Project. Once complete, the factory will be 100% self-sufficient in power supply.

 CSI Initiatives:

To mitigate against climate change, the factory maintains tree nurseries within its catchment. It also has two major tree planting projects at Osinoni and Poroko in Trasmara West Sub-county.

The factory in partnership with KTDA foundations offers secondary school fee scholarships to needy students

Moreover the company is involved in maintenance of feeder roads within its catchment and training of farmers in GAP, Health and Holistic economic empowerment through the FFS program
