FACTORY PROFILE.

Kiru Tea Factory Co. Ltd is a KTDA-managed and is one of the (9) Factories in region two.  It was commissioned on 23rd June 1993 with 16 buying centers and 2, 330 registered growers.  The factory now serves 52 buying centers with over 8,400 tea farmers and approximately 45,000 direct dependants.

It is situated at the windward slopes of Aberdare ranges at 0037”09 Degrees South of Equator and 36”18’4” degrees east of meridian at a height of 2032 M above sea level.

Kiru Tea Factory Company Limited is located in Mathioya District of Murang’a County.  It comprises the whole of Kiru Location and parts of Gacharage-ini Sub-location, parts of Kamacharia and Kamune sub-location of Kamacharia Location.  Mathioya, Thuruthuru and Rwarai are the rivers traversing the catchment.

The factory is governed by six (6) Directors elected by the tea farmers.  Their roles are policy making and governance, contracting managing agent, Authorizing procurements (goods/services), and approving annual budgets/accounts.

The scope of the integrated management system is provision of agricultural services, receipt of green leaf, manufacture, packaging and dispatch of black tea.

The Food safety scope covers the Made Black Tea processed through Field Services; Green leaf reception, withering, CTC/Orthodox, Fermentation, Drying, Sorting, Packing and Dispatch at Kiru Tea Factory.

GREEN LEAF PAYMENT

Green leaf payments are based on monthly deliveries and cumulative annual deliveries.

Monthly – current initial payment Ksh 21.00 per kilogram of green leaf.

CLIMATE CHANGE POLICY

Kiru Tea Factory Co. Ltd is committed to the implementation and maintenance of climate change mitigation and adaptation measures within our factory and the entire catchment’s area through a highly structured mechanism by maintaining tree nurseries, planting indigenous tree in schools, institutions, churches and conducting tree planting days.

In order to achieve this, factory will:-

Ø  Protect riparian strips by advising farmers to plant indigenous trees

Ø  Provide indispensable resources

Ø  Promote good agricultural practices (GAP)

Ø  Develop and implement an energy policy and management system

Ø  Develop and implement a waste management system

Ø  Capacity building on climate change for all staff, farmers and stakeholders

Ø  Liaising and partnering with other stakeholders

Ø  Training farmers on the need for diversification

RAIN FOREST ALLIANCE

Kiru Tea Factory Co. Ltd has already undergone R.A. recertification audit to which we managed to retain the certificate now based on the four principles. However there is need for continuous sensitization as to various requirements and grower commitments made during the internal audit by lead farmers.
