FACTORY HISTORY AND PROFILE
  • Mogogosiek Tea Factory Co. Ltd falls within KTDA administration Region V and is located in Mogogosiek Location, Mogogosiek Division of Konoin Sub-County, Bomet County. It is situated 13 km from Litein town and 330 Km from Nairobi.
  • The factory was commissioned in 1984 to manufacture black C.T.C tea with an annual installed processing capacity of 8, 000, 000 kgs green leaf. The capacity has since been enhanced and it currently stands at 30, 000, 000 kgs of green leaf per a year.
  • The increase in crop production and to cater for the wide catchment, two satellite factories, Kobel and Boito were commissioned in September, 2009 and January, 2016 respectively.
Catchment Growers and Hectareage
  • Mogogosiek catchment’s area has a total of 33,128 registered growers with a total of 5,576.95 Ha under tea, giving an average farm size of 0.25Ha.
  • With the favourable rains and good tea husbandry, the factory catchment has potential for more tea planting and production. There are plans to build three more satellite factories namely; Kamungei, Kiptenden and Embomos Tea Factories.
Factory Management

The factory is governed by six (6) Directors elected by the tea farmers.  Their roles are policy making and governance, contracting managing agent, Authorizing procurement (goods/services), and approving annual budgets/accounts.

CHALLENGES AMONG TEA FARMERS

  1. High Energy Costs
  2. Low/Fluctuating tea prices in the global market
  3. High cost of inputs and services
  4. Adoption of good plucking standards vis-à-vis escalating costs of plucking.
  5. Poor leaf quality as a result of green leaf hawking and poor roads.
  6. High cost of machinery ( to be VAT exempted)

FUTURE PLANS

Hydro electric power in partnership with other factories so as to reduce the electricity cost.

Automation of all processes so as to reduce on labour cost.

Product diversification to tap new markets (e.g. orthodox teas)

Plans are underway to construct three other factories.

TEA ACT IMPLEMENTATION STATUS

  1. New board has taken over.
  2. Fertilizer has been issued to farmers, (farmers didn’t get enough).
  3. Initial green leaf payment has been increased to Ksh. 20 from Ksh. 18, and plans are underway to ensure payment is done at the beginning of each month.
  4. Price stabilization funds have been set aside.
