Momul Tea Factory

FACTORY HISTORY.

  • Tea was first grown in the catchment in 1948 but most of the farms were established in later years from 1964 to date. Momul was commissioned in 2002 as a two line Factory with capacity of 15million kgs of Green leaf. In 2008, the factory was upgraded to 3 line factory with a capacity of 25 million kilograms of green leaf. The type of tea manufactured in the factory is Black CTC.

FACTORY LOCATION.

 The factory is built on a 17 acre plot, situated 35 km from Kericho town along Kericho-Sondu-Kisumu road, within Chemamul location, Kabianga division of Kericho West Sub County. The factory is 269 km from Nairobi.

 The bordering Counties are Kisumu County to the west, Bureti Sub County to the south, Nandi County to the north and Nakuru County to the north east.

INFORMATION ON GROWERS AND THE CATCHMENT.

  • 18,166 growers with over 2,878 Hectares of land under tea.
  • Average farm size is 0.5 Acres.
  • Average Production per bush is 1.20Kg per year.
  • Total number of tea bushes: 30,182,830.
  • 152 Tea collection centres – Each collection Centre has a list of registered farmers. Collection centres are points where farmers deliver their leaf to be collected the factory.
  • Distance to the furthest collection Centre is 21Km (one way)
  • Road Network is fairly good.

Growers Administration – The catchment area is divided into six Administrative Tea Zones. Each Zone has an average of 15 to 28 buying centres .Each zone elect a Director who forms the factory board.

GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION.

         Temperatures: 160 C – 250 C. The temperatures are moderate and favourable. 

         Altitude: Ranges between 1500M – 2100M ASL. 

         Rainfall: Rainfall ranges between 1500MM – 2400MM annually.

         Soils: Volcanic soil types Classified as: latosols i.e darkred clay loam black Cotton soils.

SPECIAL PROJECTS & CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT:

  • Settet Micro-Hydro Electricity Generation Project: This is the first project of its kind in West of Rift. It is nearing completion after which the factory will be 100% self-sufficient in power supply.
  • CSI Initiatives: 1.Sponsoring needy students in full high school scholarship

  2. Assist in Construction and equipping local schools.
  3. Partnering with other stakeholders in Mau west reforestation and

                           conservation.
