Factory History

Githongo Tea Factory Co. Ltd was commissioned on 5th January 1976 to manufacture Black CTC teas with then annual processing capacity of 5,500,000 Kgs of green leaf. This capacity has been increasing over the years through factory expansions initiated in the financial years 1986/87 and 1997/98. The factory now has a capacity of 20million kgs of green leaf.

Location

Githongo Tea Factory Co. Ltd is located in Meru County, 261kms from Nairobi and 11kms off Embu Meru road from Gitimbine junction. The factory lies at 35° 37’ East of Greenwich Meridian and 0° 01’ north of the Equator at an Altitude of 1971 m above sea level. It falls within KTDA administrative Region IV.

Growers and Area under Tea

Githongo Tea Factory Co. Ltd has a total of 5,641 registered growers with an average farm size of approximately 0.51 acres. The total acreage under tea continues to increase through new plantations albeit slow growth of about 350000 tea seedlings mainly established by the factory on yearly basis. The catchment has potential for higher production per unit area with continuous improvement on good agricultural practices and extension services.

Climate & Natural Features

Rainfall: 1200-2000 mm per annum. Imenti is situated just next to the famous Mt. Kenya forest and Mount Ithangune.
