Imenti Tea Factory

Factory History:

Tea was first planted in the area in 1959. During the years that followed; planting was intensified in the region and this facilitated the construction of Imenti Tea Factory, which was commissioned on 28th April 1971 by the then Minister for Finance and Economic Planning Hon. Mwai Kibaki, EGH.MP. The factory was that time managed by Eastern Produce Group until the year 1981 when it was taken over by Kenya Tea Development Authority (now Kenya Tea Development Agency Limited).

Factory Location:

Imenti tea factory is situated at Kathera Location (South Imenti Division) of Meru Central district. Imenti is 8 KMs from Nkubu, 23 KMs from Meru town and 229 KMs from the capital city, Nairobi.

Altitude:

The factory is on relatively high altitude of 2000M above sea level approximately 0.2º south of Equator along 37.6º East Longitude.

Number of Growers in the Area:

Currently, the factory serves 5189 growers with a potential area of 1251 Hectares of land.

Climate & Natural Features:

Rainfall: 1200-2000 mm per annum. Imenti is situated just next to the famous Mt. Kenya forest and Mount Ithangune.

Special Projects & CSI:

Micro-Hydro Electricity Generation Project: This is the first project of its kind in KTDA. It is nearing completion after which the factory will be 100% self-sufficient in power supply.
CSI Initiatives: The factory has two major tree planting projects:
- Mwigiki farm project: This is a joint project involving four other factories. Acreage owned is 1512 acres. We have planted eucalyptus tree species in 600 acres with approximately 600,000 trees. Number of seedlings in the nursery is 40,000.
- Mitunguu farm project: We have 50 acres of land where we have planted eucalyptus species trees this year. Number of trees planted is 45,000.
