Kambaa Tea Factory

Factory History:

·         Kambaa Tea was first planted in the area in 1965. During the years that followed; planting was intensified in the region and this facilitated the construction of Kambaa Tea Factory, which was commissioned in 1974 by H.E the late Daniel Arap Moi. The factory was at that time managed by Kenya Tea Development Authority (now Kenya Tea Development Agency Limited).

Factory Location:

·         The factory is located in Githunguri Sub-county, Kiambu County about 60kms South West of Nairobi city. We are located at uplands Githunguri road about 10kms from uplands and 8kms from Githunguri.

Altitude:

·         The factory is on relatively high altitude of  2127M above sea level,  latitude 1º 3’ 59S,  36.7º 43’ 20E Longitude.

Number of Growers in the Area:

·         Currently, the factory serves 5132 growers with a potential area of 1947 Hectares of land.

Types of Teas grown:

Ø Old stumps

Ø Clonal plants such as 15/10, 31/8, 6/8, BB35, 303/577, TN14/3 SFS150, 406/90

Climate & Natural Features:

·         Rainfall: 1800-2100 mm per annum. Kambaa tea factory is situated 24kms to Kiriita forest and 33kms to Karura forest and about 124kms to Aberdare ranges

Special Projects & Corporate Social Investment:

·         Turbine Water Project: This is a project that has benefited the company and some neighboring facilities. It is a 100% self-sufficient in water supply.

·         Farm projects: The factory has Six major tree planting projects namely: Tumaini farm 145 acres, Olobolosat farm 164 acres, Elburgon farm 100 acres Simbara farm 65 acres, Laikipia farm 40 acres and Ndemi farm 8 acres. All the farms are 90% planted with Eucalyptus tree species except for Ndemi which was recently acquired.

·         Kambaa Tea Factory grants scholarship to bright and needy student for secondary education.  Currently we have five students in various National, Extra counties and county secondary schools.
