Factory Highlights

The Factory was opened on 8^th October 1964 to manufacture CTC teas and was later commissioned and handed over to KTDA in 1963 by the first president of Kenya, the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. The initial annual installed processing capacity was 5,500,000kgs green leaf and later expanded to 15,000,000kgs capacity.

Factory Location

The factory is situated in Mataara Sub-location, Gituamba Location Chania –Sub-county Kiambu County.

It lies at about 37^oE & 1 ^o south of the Equator.

It falls within Region I of the KTDA Administrative regions. The Factory is about 80 kms from Nairobi.

No of Growers

The factory has current grower population of 4504 growers with 1176.72 hectares under tea giving an average farm size of 0.27Ha.

Type of Tea Produced

Tea was first grown in the catchment in the year 1958.  The major clones planted in the catchment include TRFK 31/8 and 6/8. It produces Black CTC Teas.

Climatic Conditions

The Factory experiences mean minimum temperatures of 15⁰c, and a mean maximum of 20⁰c with an average humidity of 85. It lies at an altitude of about 1900meters above sea level.

The factory receives an average annual rainfall of 2000mm.

Special projects and corporate social investments

1. Sponsoring needy students within Mataara catchment in full high school scholarship.
2. Gravity water Project. – 225 cubic meter water tank already complete and supplying water to the factory and the community
3. Maintenance of Tea roads- The factory maintains all the roads in the tea growing catchment.
4. National/International Disasters- The factory through KTDA participates in donations for all national and international disasters Partnering with other stakeholders in Mau west reforestation and conservation.
5. Firewood Land – 106.47 acres and 236.81 already acquired in Naivasha and olkalou respectively. Tota acreage 343.28 is fully planted with trees for sustainable firewood supply.
